Beautiful sunny day in Das Boot

Firstly Highroller and Chainsaw ripped up Emerald in a TTT, finishing time?  1:03.  Well I'm nothing if not consistent.  Did stop for a layer adjustment and throttled back a few times so I think we'll be crackin' and hour soon.  Crazy clear and crisp from the top looking over the upper Yampa Valley, Stagecoach and the Flattops and great conditions in the trees on the way down.  Best part of the descent were the two wide open meadows on Emerald, both of which were glittering with hoar-frost and perfect powder on top of a slightly firmer layer (didn't really snow here this week) that allowed fast powder turns across the low angle meadows.  Fun!

Then Trout got to show off his skills on the big Magic Carpet as Jen and Momma watched.  He has really picked up some snow pow and turning techniques from his ski classes.  Guess how many turns he can make in the length of this run?  I don't know either 'cuz he straightlined it five times in a row, note leash!  IF I had to guess I'd say we have two more days on this run before hitting it from the top.  Take pity on me now as the top of Howelson is accessed by probably the steepest poma in the country...gonna be interesting.

Emerald Mountain TT

2nd weekly TT skinning up to the radio towers on Emerald.  Had the iPod in, chugging along pushing the pace, "sprinted" at the end and managed to shave a whole 1 minute off TT #1, one minute, really?  So PR is now 1:03 Blackmere to the top. Ah, well got to start somewhere.  Back in the distant day when I used to be riding towards the front of the pack (on my single "Faster" no less) I had a couple TTs I used to like to gauge fitness against during the year.  Poorman to Bald Mtn on the mtb was a favorite before my little cheater connector got gated off, Flagstaff of course (35 min or so if I recall), hot laps at Betasso (old course) in 13 min or so...
Here in the 'Boat I've set initial times mountain biking up Spring Creek (1:05) and skinning Emerald.  I think Fish Creek will make a great roadie climb/TT

View from the top looking S up the Yampa Valley.  Bottom of Rabbit ears is at 10 o'clock, Stagecoach at 2.  Fun road rides thatta way in a couple months time

iPod, schmypod!  Thought I was cooking along to Rage Against the Machine and others but only shaved 1 minute off last week.  Did do much better down the steep new lines where they pulled out the beetle-kill this summer, confidence of knee pads helps, there's lots of trunks and stumps left in there

Cheese-O would go!

Blizzard in the face?  That just means no lift lines sucka, let's hit it! No idea what you guys are up to (seriously what's going down?) but Los Alford, like Los Lobos, are getting after it.  Trout fueled up with a Honey Stinger Waffle and a hot chocolate then ripped up the Magic Carpet, turning!, snow plow, hitting some jumps (no really, I have video).  We're about ready to take him up the real run once we get a leash/harness thingy...the kid likes to point 'em too much to be set free just yet.
Chainsaw and Highroller swapped off and got in a couple runs each as well on the real hill, good thing too since the 14" of pow that fell last night wasn't going to ski itself!  Mid-thigh on this guy. Back to the Love Shack for lunch and nap time, now THIS is why you live in a ski town, no I-70, parking garages, shuttles, traffic jams...

Missing two items...

Thar she blows, missing two small items before I can build 'er up.  See who can tell what's needed on my big crosser?

Butler Gulch

We were the last car in the parking lot, but we got a little bit of powder and more familiar with Butler Gulch.
Pretty Sweet!

Gonna dress it up with one of these here pretties

Couple of these bad boys...

Maybe a set of these...and top it off with a little genuine cow

Saweet!  Now if only I can find legs to match by the time riding weather comes around again!

Rust 1, skiers 0

We'll get (back) there though!  Heading over to the hill tomorrow despite the low temps, we'll see how long Trout can last before he starts sounding like Sean missing his warm flannel skirt...

Whoo, strong finish, strong finish!

Nice job team pushing through for a solid sprint finish (for 21st place!) at the end of 2010, Los Alford's going so far as to even be awake as the ball dropped, and still drinking no less.  Bring on 2011! As is our want (mis)adventurous plans are even now being hastily scribbled on inappropriate scraps of envelopes and post its to be misplaced at a later date but we're keeping the New Year's resolutions and pronouncements simple this year.  Chainsaw's resolution is simply to be more patient, Highroller's to have more fun and to move ahead.  Trout is resolved to ski the face at Howelson...mmmm.  Where's that leash thingy?  Wishing you and yours a great start to the New Year!
